Derek and Roxane love new adventures, so when Derek wanted to find a special way to celebrate Roxane’s birthday, he found a new Pittsburgh thing with an Hawaiian flair.  Stand up paddle boarding has made its way from the oceans of the South Pacific to the waterways of Western Pennsylvania.  Derek had no idea if Roxane would appreciate the idea but there was only one way to find out.

Derek contacted Stand Up Pittsburgh, a stand up paddle board gear shop based in Ambridge.  Owner Ty Musser met Derek and Roxane at North Park’s lake on a beautiful afternoon to show the couple what stand up paddle boarding is all about.

Ty was a great teacher explaining how to get out on the water and then slowly stand up and start paddling. Ty explained the hardest part is standing up initially because first time boarders feel like they’re going to fall and often over-compensate then end up in the water.  It’s a great workout because boarders must engage their core and legs for balance and paddling is a great upper body exercise.

As for how Derek and Roxane did… check out the video to take a look!
