The Fire Escape is quietly tucked away in Ben Avon and my friend suggested it was the perfect place to meet and share summer vacation stories.  It’s not easy to find (thank goodness for GPS!). It’s in the middle of a neighborhood on Church Avenue but that made it all the more charming.  It’s the type of place every neighborhood should have and reminds me of something out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

It’s right beside the real fire station and is decorated accordingly with firemen’s gear all around. There is also artwork displayed by a local artist for sale.  There is a choice of seating:  comfy chairs, wooden chairs at tables, or stools lining a bar along the the large front windows.

I plopped down in a comfy chair and enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere while waiting for my friend.  I checked over the menu posted behind the counter which included summer salads, hummus, paninis, wraps (the smoke gouda, sundered tomato pesto & baby spinach look especially good!), soups, and, of course, Firehouse chili!  There are also pastries baked on site including biscotti, muffins, scones, bagels, cinnamon rolls, cookies and brownies.

I noticed The Fire Escape offers free WiFi and was just about to go get my laptop when my friend came in with pictures from her European vacation in hand.  We both ordered iced coffees and found a perfect table to catch up.  The coffee was good but after checking out the order by the women near us, I wish I had tried a frozen coffee instead (mental note for next time).  All the coffee here is roasted by La Prima coffee in Pittsburgh.

I hope this tiny block soon includes some other quaint shops so I have another excuse to stop by and enjoy the area.
